Online Payments in Sri Lanka: An Overview
iGaming Solutions Asia Editorial Team · October 25, 2026

Understand Sri Lanka's online payment landscape for merchants.
What this page covers
Selling online into Sri Lanka raises the same three questions every market raises: what your customers actually use to pay, what the arrangement costs you, and what you have to show before a provider will let you take money. This page sets out what our directory has verified about the provider recorded for Sri Lanka, which method families to ask about, and how to confirm a claim before you build on it.
What our directory has verified
One provider profile carries a Sri Lanka market coverage record in our directory: PayHere, created from the provider's own website or a staff check with a date attached. A coverage record says one thing: our research team linked the provider to the Sri Lanka market using an official source. It does not say which methods the provider routes, that a method is enabled for your business category, or that it is live for new merchants today. Where a payment method is recorded for a provider we store it as a relationship row with a verification state you can read on the profile; where nothing is recorded, the profile says "Not publicly disclosed".
Because the recorded set is small, the questions below carry more weight than they would in a crowded market.
The method families to ask about
When you review a provider, ask which of these families it actually connects to, and on what terms:
- **Cards** - local and international debit or credit schemes, and whether the provider supports them for your category and ticket size. - **Bank transfer or internet banking** - used by some buyers for larger amounts, and by others who do not hold a card that works online. - **Phone-based transfers** - where the customer approves a payment on their own app rather than entering card details. - **Stored value or wallet flows** - where a customer pays from a balance rather than from a bank or card. - **Cash-out or agent-assisted flows** - relevant where customers fund purchases without a card.
Ask for the list in writing, and ask which entries are live today rather than planned.
Where the official material sits
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka publishes material on payment systems at https://www.cbsl.gov.lk. Read it for yourself rather than relying on a reseller's summary. Our directory does not interpret those rules for your business, and it does not state that any listed provider holds a licence.
What our records do not cover
For this provider the directory does not hold verified data on pricing per method, settlement timing, payout currency, onboarding documents, accepted business categories, or authorisation status. Ask the provider directly and keep the dated reply.
A short verification routine
1. **Open the profile and read the method rows** with their verification state, rather than assuming coverage. 2. **Ask for the live method list** for your category; methods that exist in documentation are not always enabled for new merchants. 3. **Ask about failure paths.** What happens when a customer abandons a payment mid-flow, and who issues the refund. 4. **Test the full flow** in a sandbox, including a declined and an abandoned payment. 5. **Keep every answer** with its date and source.
Where to look next
The Sri Lanka country page lists the provider our directory has recorded for that market. Use the comparison tool if you are weighing an international alternative, and submit an official document through the correction form if you hold one that answers an open question. We check every submission against its source before the record changes.
A note on the word "supports"
A page that lists a method is not the same thing as a method that is live for you. Ask whether it is enabled for new merchants in your category today, and what the failure behaviour looks like when a customer walks away mid-payment.
