India Payment Gateway Checklist for Startups

Compare what to check before choosing an Indian payment gateway.
What this page covers
A startup choosing a payment gateway in India usually has three constraints at once: very little time, no processing history to show, and a need to launch before the paperwork has settled. That combination is where bad choices get made. This page sets out what our directory has verified about the providers recorded for India, and a checklist you can work through with two or three of them.
What our directory has verified
Eleven provider profiles carry an India market coverage record, each created from the provider's own website or a staff check with a date attached: Atom Technologies, BillDesk, Cashfree Payments, CCAvenue, Easebuzz, Instamojo, Juspay, Paytm, PhonePe, Pine Labs and Razorpay.
That record says one thing: our research team linked the provider to the India market using an official source. It does not tell you the provider's pricing, how fast it approves a new company, or whether it accepts what you sell. Where our records hold nothing, the profile says "Not publicly disclosed" rather than guessing.
The startup checklist
1. **Can you integrate before the account is approved?** Being able to build against a sandbox while documents are reviewed saves weeks. Ask explicitly. 2. **What is the minimum document set for a newly registered company?** A company that is a few months old may be asked for more than an established one. Get the list in writing. 3. **Does the sandbox behave like production?** Check that callbacks, refunds and failed payments can be simulated, not just successful ones. 4. **What does the fee schedule say about the unglamorous items?** Failed attempts, refunds, chargebacks and late settlement each carry a cost that a headline rate hides. 5. **When do funds arrive, and into which account?** Ask about the first payout specifically, because the first one is often slower. 6. **What happens at your first spike?** Ask what triggers a hold or a rate limit, and how you get it lifted. 7. **Who answers when a payment fails at night?** Ask for the support route and the hours, not a promise of quality. 8. **What does the contract say about leaving?** Notice periods, data export and termination charges are worth reading before you need them.
What our records do not cover
For these providers the directory does not hold verified data on pricing, onboarding time, acceptance rules, reserve policy, permitted business categories, or regulatory status. Those answers must come from the provider, and they should be written down with a date.
How to compare fairly
Send the same eight questions to two or three providers and compare the written answers rather than the sales pitch. Read the regulator's published material at https://www.rbi.org.in for yourself, and form your own view on what applies to your company. If a provider gives you a document that answers an open question, submit it through the correction form on their profile so our record can be checked against the source.
Where to look next
The India country page lists the providers our directory has recorded for that market. Place two or three profiles in the comparison tool to see, side by side, which fields are verified and which are still missing. That gap list is usually the shortest version of your question set.
Why the order of the questions matters
Start with the questions that can stop you: whether you can build before approval, and whether your business category is accepted at all. Those two decide whether a provider is even available to you. Pricing matters, but a lower rate from a provider that will not onboard your company is worth nothing. Work down the rest of the list only once the blocking questions are answered, and record each reply with its date so that two providers can be compared on the same basis rather than on memory.
