Local Payment Methods Across South and Southeast Asia
iGaming Solutions Asia Editorial · August 10, 2026
Wallets, bank transfers and QR schemes carry most consumer volume across Asian markets. A market-by-market orientation for merchants.
Card penetration varies enormously across Asia, and in several of the region's largest markets it is not the default way consumers pay online. Merchants who launch with cards only frequently see conversion far below expectation — not because demand is absent, but because the checkout does not offer the method the customer actually holds.
Account-to-account is the backbone
Real-time bank transfer rails underpin much of the region's consumer payment activity. They tend to be low cost relative to cards, settle quickly, and are widely trusted. The trade-off is that refunds and disputes work differently from card networks: there is generally no chargeback mechanism, so refund policy and customer service carry more weight.
Wallets are market-specific
Each market has its own dominant wallets, and they rarely travel across borders. Supporting "wallets" as a category means little; supporting the specific wallets that lead in each country is what changes conversion. Confirm with any provider exactly which wallets they support per market, not just that wallet support exists.
QR schemes and interoperability
Several countries have introduced national QR standards that let one code work across many banks and wallets. Where these exist, they can simplify acceptance considerably — one integration reaching a large share of consumers. Coverage and cross-border interoperability are still expanding, so verify the current position rather than relying on older summaries.
Cards still matter — selectively
For cross-border purchases, higher-value transactions and business customers, cards remain important. The practical approach is not cards versus local methods, but a checkout that presents the right two or three options in each market and does not clutter the page with the rest.
Practical steps
Start from your own data: where do your customers come from, and where do you see checkout abandonment concentrate? Pick the top methods by market share in those countries, then shortlist providers that support them natively rather than through a chain of intermediaries. Ask about settlement for each method separately — local rails and card rails often settle on different schedules.
Verify before you build
Method coverage changes frequently. Before an integration decision, confirm the current list on the provider's own documentation and note the date you checked. Provider profiles on iGaming Solutions Asia record the source and date for the payment methods shown, so you can see when the information was last confirmed.
