iGaming Solutions Asia cover: UPI Payments in India: A Merchant Overview

Understand how UPI works for accepting customer payments in India.

What this page covers

The Unified Payments Interface, usually called UPI, is the phone-based transfer system that many Indian customers already use for everyday payments. If you sell into India, the practical question is not whether UPI exists but whether your checkout can offer it, what it costs you, and what you must do to keep it working. This page sets out what our directory has verified, and what you still have to confirm with a provider.

Where the official material sits

UPI is publicly documented as a retail payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, which publishes material about the interface at https://www.npci.org.in. The Reserve Bank of India publishes regulatory material on payment systems at https://www.rbi.org.in. Both are the places to read for yourself rather than rely on a reseller's summary. Our directory does not restate or interpret the rules that apply to your business.

What our directory has verified

Eleven provider profiles carry an India market coverage record, each created from the provider's own website or a staff check with a date attached: Atom Technologies, BillDesk, Cashfree Payments, CCAvenue, Easebuzz, Instamojo, Juspay, Paytm, PhonePe, Pine Labs and Razorpay.

That record says one thing: our research team linked the provider to the India market using an official source. It does not say the provider offers UPI to merchants, that UPI is enabled for your business category, or that its UPI flow suits your order pattern. Where a capability is not in our records, the profile says "Not publicly disclosed", and where a payment method is recorded we store it as a relationship row with a verification state you can read on the profile.

What to ask a provider about UPI

1. **Is UPI live for new merchants in my category today**, rather than planned? 2. **Which UPI flows are supported** - a collect request you raise, a pay-by-VPA option at checkout, or a recurring mandate. 3. **What the customer sees** - how a collect request is presented, and what happens if they decline or ignore it. 4. **How failures are reported** - timeouts, partial responses, and how you reconcile them. 5. **Refunds** - who initiates them, how long they take, and what the customer is told. 6. **Recurring payments** - what the customer must approve, how a mandate is paused or cancelled, and what the provider does when a mandate fails. 7. **Cost** - what you pay per transaction and per failed attempt, in writing.

What our records do not cover

For these providers the directory does not hold verified data on UPI pricing, settlement timing, payout currency, mandate rules, or acceptance criteria. Ask each provider directly and keep the dated reply.

A short verification routine

Open the provider profile and read the method rows with their verification state. Ask for the live UPI flow list in writing. Test the full flow in a sandbox, including a declined and an abandoned payment. Check the regulator's public site at https://www.rbi.org.in and the system operator's site at https://www.npci.org.in for material that applies to you. Keep every answer with its date.

Where to look next

The India country page lists the providers our directory has recorded for that market. Place two or three profiles in the comparison tool to see which questions remain open for each. If you hold an official document that adds or corrects a UPI record, submit it through the correction form on the profile and we will check it against the source before the record moves.

A final note on assumptions

The costly mistake is assuming a capability because a marketing page mentions it. UPI appears in a great deal of material. What matters is whether the specific flow you need is live for a merchant like you, and whether the provider will say so in writing before you build against it.
