Cross-Border Payments from India: When You Need a Licensed Provider
iGaming Solutions Asia Editorial Team · October 25, 2026

Understand when cross-border payment flows from India require licensed entities.
What this page covers
When you collect money from customers outside India, or pay a supplier abroad, the arrangement stops being only a technical question. Foreign exchange rules decide who may move funds and on what paperwork. This page sets out what our directory has verified, and how to check a provider's answer instead of taking it.
What our directory has verified
Eleven provider profiles carry an India market coverage record, each created from the provider's own website or a staff check with a date attached: Atom Technologies, BillDesk, Cashfree Payments, CCAvenue, Easebuzz, Instamojo, Juspay, Paytm, PhonePe, Pine Labs and Razorpay.
That record says one thing: our research team linked the provider to the India market using an official source. It does not state that the provider holds any particular permission, and it does not state that the provider can settle a cross-border flow for you. Where our records hold nothing, the profile says "Not publicly disclosed".
When the question becomes a permissions question
Three situations tend to raise it:
- you are collecting in a currency other than the one your account settles in - you are paying a supplier abroad, rather than refunding a customer - you are holding customer funds before releasing them to a seller
For each of these, ask the provider which cases they handle today, and ask them to name the permission they rely on. Then read the regulator's published material yourself at https://www.rbi.org.in and form your own view. Our directory does not interpret those rules for your business.
What to ask before you build
1. **Which corridors are live today** for merchants in my category, rather than planned? 2. **In which currency am I paid**, who sets the exchange rate, and what margin sits inside that rate? 3. **What paperwork must the buyer or the seller provide** before funds move? 4. **How long does a payout take**, and what causes a hold or a reversal? 5. **What happens if a payment is reversed after settlement**, and who bears the cost? 6. **Which document states the provider's position** - a public page, a contract clause, or only an email?
What our records do not cover
For these providers the directory does not hold verified data on cross-border pricing, payout currencies, settlement timelines, supported corridors, or authorisation status. Those answers come from the provider and from your bank, and both should be recorded with a date.
How to verify a claim
Ask for the official page or the contract clause, then read it. If the wording says the provider "supports" a corridor, ask what supports means in practice: is it live today, is it live for your category, and has it been used by merchants like you. A provider that can answer those three questions in writing is telling you something different from one that cannot.
Where to look next
The India country page lists the providers our directory has recorded for that market. Place two or three profiles in the comparison tool while you wait for replies, and use the correction form if you hold an official document that answers an open question. We check every submission against its source before a record changes.
A practical way to test the answer
Before you commit volume, send a small amount through the corridor you care about and watch what actually happens: how long the funds take, what your bank records show, and whether the paperwork the provider promised is the paperwork that is finally asked for. One real transaction answers more questions than a week of email, and it answers them before your customers are involved. Keep the record of that test alongside the provider's written reply.
